So, why is it important that dental office and lab see color accurately?

If there is an accurate shade take-off to make porcelains and tooth colored fillings, the lab is only half way home. If the lab is using off-spectrum, low-CRI lights, then it’s a risky proposition that your pieces will be made in the “correct” color.

It makes dollars and sense to keep the re-do’s off the radar all together… Good use of time and materials increases profitability, helps keep a quality reputation and differentiates you from others.

There are three major dynamics in play in every lighting environment:

Did you know that color from rubber gloves and the patient's cloths will reflect onto the tooth and change the shade specification? Understanding the 3 lighting dynamics will assist in understanding how seeing accurately works.

1. The light’s “emission:” The lighting industry has established a specific outdoor light reading as the natural-light bench-mark. This reading is taken at 2 pm in the shade on a sunny day. The two measurements taken are the Kelvin, which is 5500, and the CRI (color rendering index), which is 100. Light bulbs have a Kelvin and CRI rating as well as a lumen rating (which measures brightness). This natural light reading is the preferred spectrum for color-correct light.

2. Is the light surface reflecting just a gleam of light, (a glare) or is the light able to reflect the color found within the translucent layers? (Click on the image below to enlarge.)

3. The color reflected off surfaces near the patient can affect color readings. E.G. A bright blue or bright orange dental glove will reflect the glove's color, especially if it's next to a shade guide.
